Bob Atchison has worked for over 20 years for the Kansas Forest Service and is responsible for state-wide coordination and promotion of the Rural Forestry Program which provides professional forestry assistance to rural landowners through six district foresters and a watershed forester all of whom Bob supervises.  Bob manages the Forest Stewardship Program, a USFS State & Private Forestry program that provides comprehensive, long-term Forest Stewardship management plans to private landowners.   He is liaison to the USFS Northern Research Station’s Forest Inventory and Analysis Program that annually inventories the size and condition of Kansas forestland.

Bob serves as the Program Administrator for the Kansas Forestry Association, Kansas Tree Farm Committee, Kansas Chapter of the Walnut Council, and the State Forest Stewardship Coordinating Committee.  He is a member of the NRCS Kansas Technical Committee and liaison to USDA conservation programs such as EQIP for Forestland Health and the Conservation Reserve Program.  Bob provides leadership to the agency in competitive grant writing and in the development of the Kansas Forest Action Plan.  Bob was the recipient of KSU President Schulz’s 2011 Award of Excellence for Unclassified Professionals.

Bob worked as a forester for the Arkansas Forestry Commission for three years and began employment with the Kansas Forest Service in 1990 as a district forester in Hutchinson and later out of Manhattan. He has also served as the Community Forestry Coordinator for the agency and has been the Rural Forestry Coordinator at the State Office in Manhattan since 1997.

Bob graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1981 with a Bachelor's of Science in Forestry. He grew up in Hays, Kansas, where his father served as a State and Extension Forester for most of his career.  He currently serves as the Chair-elect for the Great Plains Chapter of the Society of American Foresters.
