The Kansas Forest Service is committed to a web site accessible for all.  We agree with Tim Berners-Lee when he said,

Access For Persons With Disabilities:
kansasforests.org was designed with a goal towards complying with Section 508 of the 1998 Amendment of the Rehabilitation Act and the W3C Accessibility Design Guidelines.

Access keys - Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys on the keyboard defined on the web site. On Windows, you may press Alt + an access key; on a Macintosh, you may press Command + an access key.  All pages on kansasforests.org define the following access keys:

Links - All links on kansasforests.org utilize the title attribute, which describes the link in greater detail.  Links have been written to make sense out of context.

Tabindex - All links on kansasforests.org utilize the tabindex attribute, which allows users to navigate a page using a keyboard instead of a pointing device.  Links follow the following tabindex rules:

Images - All content images used in kansasforests.org include descriptive alt attribues.  Purely decorative images include a null alt attribute.  Complex images include the longdesc attribute or inline descriptions to explain the significance of each image to non-visual readers.

Printing - kansasforests.org relies on cascading style sheets for print layout.  Repetitive elements from page to page will not be included when pages are printed.  To assist readability on physical media, fonts are converted to serif-type fonts and links are underlined for easy identification.

Visual Design - kansasforests.org uses cascading style sheets for visual layout.  These style sheets use only relative font sizes, which are compatible with user-specified text sizes in visual browsers.  If your browser does not support style sheets, the content of each page should still be readable.


Portable Digital Format:
The Kansas Forest Service publishes a multitude of information, both on paper and electronically.  Most of these documents have been faithfully reproduced to HTML web pages.  However, there still may exist some documents we have yet to find the opportunity to reproduce to HTML.  In these rare instances, these documents are available in Portable Document Format (PDF).  Viewing PDF files requires a free plugin called Adobe Reader.  You may download Adobe Reader from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/.  If you prefer is view PDF files as HTML, you may convert PDF files to HTML through Access Adobe.

If an HTML page was reproduced from an existing document, the original document may be available in its original format as a PDF.  Look for "Adobe Acrobat Version" under the page title when this option is available.
