The Kansas Arbor Day Poster Contest is an artistic competition open to public, private and home-schooled fifth-graders across the state that strives to increase an appreciation and awareness of the important role that trees play in the environment and in our quality of life. The contest theme is Trees are Terrific … and Kansas Forests Are Too!
The lesson plan, available above, was designed to highlight the forest resource that exists in Kansas, to teach students how to identify the pattern of forest cover, factors that influence forests in Kansas, and the importance of forest ecosystems. Classroom materials and hands-on activities detailed in the lesson plan correlate with Kansas curricular standards in Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. The lesson plan may also be used as a supplement to science units on plants, ecosystems and biomes.
More than 1,000 Kansas students participate at the local level, with six district-winning posters competing for the state prize. The State Winner, their family and teacher are invited to the Kansas Tree City USA Recognition Day in the spring where they are recognized for their achievement. State and District winners and their teachers receive various educational materials and other gifts.
