The Kansas Forest Service launched its Cooperative Fire Protection
Program in 1962. For four decades, the program has provided assistance
in the prevention and suppression of wildland fires.
"Empowering fire departments to provide better service to Kansans
through leadership, service and education."
KFS works directly with fire departments to improve their fire protection capabilities
through various programs. Vehicle and equipment acquisition is provided
through the Federal Excess Property
Program and Equipment Donation Program,
assistance is provided through
cost share programs, and
Master Fire Planning provides long range planning direction for fire
departments across the state. The program also
offers
wildland fire training
courses and a
fire prevention
focus. The Kansas Forest Service, in addition, is the sponsor of a
national program aimed at protecting your home in the event of a
wildfire, called
Firewise, in Kansas.
Recently, KFS began developing state wildland firefighting resources, in the form of engines and aircraft programs,
with the goal of providing direct fire suppression support whenever possible.
Furthermore, the Fire Management Program is in the midst of developing a
Red Card Qualification System to assist Kansas firefighters become
eligible for fighting fires on federal lands.
Publications and
other resources have
also played an important part in the programs success.
The Fire Management Program also provides resources related to
weather, training,
employment and
prescribed fire.
