Wildland/Urban Interface

The wildland/urban interface is the area where human improvements such as homes, ranches and farms come in contact with the wildlands. The problem is not restricted to states like California or Colorado. Wherever people are living in or adjacent to wildland areas, the threat of wildfire exists.

Urban expansion has driven the increased building of homes in wildland areas. Many folks desire to have a few acres of land and a nice secluded home outside of town. What most of these folks fail to recognize is the increased danger to their lives and property from wildfire in these areas. Folks that move out to the country often take with them their city values. Often these values are in conflict with wildfire protection.

If you are making the move to a rural area, knowledge of the many ways to reduce the risk of fire is essential.  Protect Your Home provides an in-depth discussion on what homeowners should do to improve the survivability of their home.  You may also visit the FIREWISE.org website, or call your local fire department for more information.  If you already have a home in this interface, take the Fire Hazard Test to evaluate the survivability of your home.

Kansas homeowners need to take on the responsibility of safeguarding their homes. With a state that relies heavily upon volunteer fire departments with increased response times, aged equipment and stretched manpower, homeowners must do their part to protect their home. Make your home FIREWISE!
