Protect Your Home
Accessibility

Access to your property can often determine if your property receives protection or not. Firefighters often have with them large pieces of equipment and cannot compromise their own safety to defend a home or property. Before a firefighter will commit their equipment to a house, they must ensure they will have an easy escape route should a swift retreat be required.

This often means a need for wide roads with thinned vegetation along the sides providing visibility around corners.  Overhanging vegetations, such as tree branches, should be cleared from roads.  Driveways should to be designed to allow large trucks to approach the house.  Any and all bridges should be designed to support the weight of large equipment.  All roads should restrictions on weight and height clearly posted, and all dead-end roads should be clearly marked to allow enough room for a fire engine to easily turn-around should it be needed. All one-way roads should periodically have turnarounds spaced along them.

Double check your street is named or numbered, and a sign is visibly posted at each street intersection. If your house is not easily visible from the road, post your house address at the beginning of your driveway. Also make sure your street name and house number are not duplicated elsewhere in the county.

Requirements For Roads
Roads should have more than one access route if possible and be able to support 20 Ton vehicles.  Each road should be no less than 12 feet wide with 2 foot shoulders on each side for driveways, and no less than 24 feet wide with 4 foot shoulders on each side for roads.  They should not be excessively steep, with no grade greater than 10%, and no less than .5%.  All roads should have 10 feet of fuel reduced on each side.

Requirements For Gates
Gates should be 2 feet wider than the traveled surface, at least 30 feet the public road and open inward.  Keys and codes should be provided to local fire and rescue departments for emergencies.

If you home is accessible to firefighters, and allows an easy and effective escape route, the chances of your house being protected in the event of a wildfire increases dramatically.
