Forest Inventory & Analysis

Being able to proactively address the threats and opportunities facing the forests, woodlands, windbreaks and riparian forest resources of Kansas could not be possible without a continuous inventory that collects data about tree species, size condition and many other attributes.  The USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, Forest Inventory and Analysis Program (FIA) are a critical partner and without them such data would not exist for Kansas.  State-wide periodic inventories of Kansas forestland have occurred in 1937, 1965, 1981 and 1994.  Since 2001, FIA began conducting annual inventories to better evaluate forest resources.  Each year 20% of the state is inventoried which accomplishes a complete inventory every 5 years.  One plot is measured for every 6,000 acres which provides statistically sound data on a state-wide and regional scale, but is not adequate for reliable data on a county level.  Details on sampling procedure and plot design are provided at the bottom of this page.  For trees to be considered forestland in the FIA inventory, the land must be an acre in size, 10% stocked by trees and at least 120 feet wide.  Unfortunately over half the trees in Kansas fall outside of this definition and are found in windbreaks and riparian forests which provide critical benefits to the people of Kansas.  For this and other reasons a state-wide inventory was conducted in 2008 and 2009 as part of the Great Plains Tree and Forest Pest Initiative to capture information about our windbreaks and other agroforestry resources.  A summary of GPI and FIA data has been incorporated into the Forest in Kansas section of our web site.

Annual FIA reports are published each year, with a comprehensive report at the end of each 5 year cycle. Our most recent 5 year report provides data from 2001-2005.  The next 5 year report should be available in the near future.  Results from published inventories are listed below along with a table summarizing all reports.
