Since 96% of Kansas forestland is privately owned it is important for
the Kansas Forest Service to understand woodland owners to help them
effectively manage their forest resources. In response, starting in
2002, the National Woodland Owner Survey began contacting a percentage
of Kansas woodland owners to collect information about management
objectives, demographics, marketing of forest products, participation in
government incentives programs, how actively landowners manage their
woodlands, and their perceptions of their woodland’s condition.
This information will help the Kansas Forest Service and the USDA Forest
Service better understand, and thus, better serve the forest and
landowners of Kansas.
It will be several years before enough data is collected to
provide a good statistical sample for Kansas. In the meantime,
additional information about the National Woodland Owner Survey may be
found at the North Central Research Station
National Woodland Owner Survey webpage. Additionally, the USDA Forest Service published a
1994 Report
PDF, with goals similar to the National Woodland Owner Survey.
