The Kansas Forest Service recognizes private landowners who demonstrate
a commitment to a land stewardship ethic that focuses on timber
management, fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, soil productivity,
aesthetics, and recreation - as a valuable legacy for future
generations. Each year District Foresters have the opportunity to
submit nominations to the Kansas Forest Service state office by January
31st. Nominations may be
exclusively for district recognition or for both District and Forest
Stewardship Landowner of the Year. The State Forester and the Rural
Forestry Coordinator review nominations and select a Forest Stewardship
Landowner of the Year by February 28th.
If you know of someone who should be nominated, or believe you are
worthy of this honor, do not hesitate to contact your
District Forester.
Award Criteria
Awards are based on three distinguishing criteria:
- Landowners must have a Forest Stewardship Management Plan for
their property.
- District award winners must have established at least one forestry
practice recommended in the Forest Stewardship Management Plan.
- The State Forest Stewardship Landowner of Year must demonstrate a
long-term commitment to actively managing their forest and related
natural resources on their property. Multiple forestry practices have
been successfully established and the Forest Stewardship Management
plan is being actively implemented.
Award Materials
Each District Award Winner will receive a framed certificate and a
metal sign to be displayed at their property. The Forest Stewardship
Landowner of the Year will also receive a metal sign and a solid black
walnut plaque.
Often the Fall Forestry Field Day is held on the property of the Forest
Stewardship Landowner of the Year. The Forest Stewardship Landowner of
the Year is also nominated for the Kansas Wildlife Federation’s Forest
Conservationist of the Year award and may also be nominated for the Tree
Farmer of the Year Award if they are eligible.
