The Fall Forestry Field Day provides an opportunity
for woodland owners, forest industry, foresters, research scientists and
other natural resource professionals to network and share the best
information, experience and techniques available to protect and sustain
the forest resources of Kansas.
The 2007 Field Day will be hosted at Jay Allen’s Tree Farm located about 10 miles north of Fort Scott near the town of Fulton. The Allen’s Tree Farm features 114 acres of forestland, half of which has been improved through thinning and pruning operations. The Allen’s have also planted 32 acres of trees and shrubs through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).
Selected as the 2007 Forest Stewardship Tree Farmer of the Year by the Kansas Tree Farm Committee, the Allen’s have done a remarkable job caring for the trees on their property. Nominated for the award by Dave Bruckerhoff, Kansas Forest Service district forester, Jay will receive a brand new MS 290 STIHL Farm Boss chainsaw, a hardhat with protective hearing and face shield, safety glasses, leather gloves, duffle bag, a pair of 6 ply apron chaps, an engraved walnut plaque and an award winner sign to be posted at his Tree Farm.
This year’s Field Day includes 6 concurrent outdoor educational sessions, forestry exhibits, vendors, refreshments and a delicious lunch. Sessions will be led by forestry and wildlife experts on thinning and pruning; wildlife damage control in new tree plantings; gathering, handling and storing tree seed; controlling competing weeds in new tree plantings; benefits of riparian forestland; and how to sell timber successfully.
A $5 registration fee will be charged to help cover the cost of lunch. For more information contact Bob Atchison at 785-532-3310 or atchison@ksu.edu.
