Ninety-six percent of Kansas's 2.2 million acres of forestland are
privately owned. The health, productivity, management, and
sustainability of this
valuable resource is the responsibility of the private landowners of
Kansas.
"Helping private landowners properly manage
their woodlands and windbreaks through education, planning and on-site
assistance from professional foresters."
The Rural Forestry Program began actively
helping private landowners
manage their woodlands in the early 1960's and continues providing
on-site professional forestry assistance today through the
Forest Stewardship Program.
Monitoring the health and condition of Kansas forestland is accomplished
through the
Kansas Forest Inventory. The
inventory reveals important
Kansas Forest Facts that guide the
Kansas Forest Service in the improvement, enhancement, protection, and
conservation of the natural forestland of Kansas.
The Rural Forestry Program also encourages participation in a variety of
non-governmental forestry organizations
that may help woodland owners reach their management goals. The
program also produces a variety of
publications and
radio broadcasts
which may serve to educate and answer specific
questions forestland owners may have.
