Rural Forestry Organizations

Non-governmental forestry organizations can help landowners successfully manage the forest and related natural resources on their properties. Listed below are the most popular rural forestry organizations in Kansas.

American Tree Farm System
The American Tree Farm System is a national program of nearly 70,000 individuals and families, of which about 110 are from Kansas, whose woodlands are certified by a Kansas Forest Service forester when they are managed in a way that protects watersheds, wildlife habitat, conserves soil, provides recreational opportunities and produces wood products. In Kansas, the American Tree Farm System is co-sponsored by the Kansas Forest Products Association which appoints a State Tree Farm Committee to operate the program.

To qualify for Tree Farm certification, woodlands must be

Once a woodland is certified as a Tree Farm landowners receive

  • A metal Tree Farm sign and certificate
  • A free one-year subscription to Tree Farmer magazine, The Practical Guide to Sustainable Forestry
  • Invitations to seminars, field days and workshops to learn more about successfully managing woodlands and tree plantings and "networking" opportunities with other landowners
  • A re-certification inspection from a forester at least every 5 years
  • People maybe honored or memorialized through the Memorial Honors Giving Program. Donations to the program provide critical support for forestry education, research and outreach to family forestland owners in Kansas.

To get started, checkout the Tree Farm Brochure or contact your local District Forester. Additional information may be found at the American Tree Farm System website.

Walnut Council
The Walnut Council is an international association of nearly 1,000 woodland owners, foresters, forest scientists and wood-producing industry representatives with about 40 members in Kansas. The Council assists in activities ranging from the technical transfer of forest research to the actual implementation of forestry practices like tree planting and timber stand improvement. The Council promotes better markets for wood and nut products and encourages sustainable forest management and utilization of American black walnut and other high quality fine hardwoods. The Council hosts local forestry field days, an annual national meeting and provides quarterly newsletters filled with helpful information about the successful growth and utilization of black walnut.
