Non-governmental forestry organizations can help
landowners successfully manage the forest and related natural
resources on their properties. Listed below are the most popular rural
forestry organizations in Kansas.
American Tree Farm System
The American Tree Farm System is a national program of nearly 70,000
individuals and families, of which about 110 are from Kansas, whose
woodlands are certified by a Kansas Forest Service forester when they
are managed in a way that protects watersheds, wildlife habitat,
conserves soil, provides recreational opportunities and produces wood
products. In Kansas, the American Tree Farm System is co-sponsored by
the Kansas Forest Products Association which appoints a State Tree
Farm Committee to operate the program. To qualify for

- Invitations to seminars, field days and workshops to
learn more about successfully managing woodlands and tree plantings
and "networking" opportunities with other landowners
- A re-certification inspection from a forester at least
every 5 years
- People maybe honored or memorialized through the
Memorial Honors Giving Program.
Donations to the program provide critical support for forestry
education, research and outreach to family forestland owners in
Kansas.

Walnut Council
The Walnut Council is an international association of nearly 1,000 woodland owners,
foresters, forest scientists and wood-producing industry
representatives with about 40 members in Kansas. The Council assists
in activities ranging from the technical transfer of forest research to the actual
implementation of forestry practices like tree planting and timber
stand improvement. The Council promotes better markets for wood and
nut products and encourages sustainable forest management and
utilization of American black walnut and other high quality fine
hardwoods. The Council hosts local forestry field days, an annual
national meeting and provides quarterly newsletters filled with
helpful information about the successful growth and utilization of
black walnut. Membership may be obtained by submitting name, address
and a $32 check to Walnut Council International Headquarters

Kansas Forest Products Association
The Kansas Forest Products Association (KFPA) is a state organization dedicated to serving the needs of landowners,
producers and consumers of forest products and to the promotion of the
conservation of forest resources through sustainable forestry
practices. KFPA is operated by a 6 member Board that provides
educational opportunities and scholarships for members to attend
workshops and seminars. Membership may be obtained by sending a $35
