Conservation Trees and Shrubs
About the Program
The Kansas Forest Service operates a tree and shrub seedling nursery where seedlings are produced, procured and distributed for conservation plantings in Kansas. A ‘conservation seedling’ is planted for a specific purpose and has the added benefit of conserving natural resources such as soil, water, or wildlife. Some examples of how conservation seedlings can be used include:
- Riparian or streamside plantings
- Windbreaks (field, livestock, farmstead)
- Wildlife habitat
- Timber/fuelwood production
- Christmas tree production
- Educational purposes (Arbor day)
Services We Provide
- Seedlings and seed of primarily Kansas native tree and shrub species
- Bareroot (spring sale only)
- Containerized (spring and fall)
- Stratified seed (spring only)
- All seedlings are sold in units of 25
- Plant protection products
Services We Cannot Provide
- Landscape Quality Trees: Conservation seedlings are 1-2 years old and are true seedlings in that they are grown from seed (variable!); they are not cultivars selected for aesthetic values and propagated for use in residential plantings. Such trees can be obtained from local landscape nurseries.
- Planting Services: For a list of forestry contractors that offere planting services, view our Forestry Contractors page.
- Free Seedlings: The nursery attempts to cover the cost of production of the seedlings in order to sustain the operation from year to year. Seedlings are priced in a way that reflects the cost of production, procurement and storage.
