Prescribed Fire

Programs

Our programs are intended to serve Kansans, non-resident landowners, communities, and fire departments throughout the state.

Serving Kansans Since 1887

The Kansas Forest Service, established in 1887, is the fifth oldest state forestry agency in the nation and continues to play a key role in the conservation and management of Kansas’ natural resources. The Kansas Forest Service is a 40-person agency housed in the state office in Manhattan, and several district and special program offices around the state. Our agency provides vital services to rural landowners, communities, fire districts, and industries across the state. Through our work, the Kansas Forest Service helps enhance forest health, manage wildfire risks, and support the sustainable use of forestry and wildland resources throughout Kansas.

Champion Tree

Champion Trees is a national program that collects data on the largest trees in the U.S. Kansas has its own program that has state and national champions.

Houses and landscape

The Firewise USA® program provides simple, effective steps to help communities reduce the risk of destruction from wildfire.

Business corner and tree

Tree City USA recognizes towns that have organized community forestry programs supported by municipal ordinance that meet national program standards.

Bush Honeysuckle

One effective treatment of bush honeysuckle infestations is the utilization of backpack mistblowers for fall treatments. Mistblowers are available for loan throughout the state. Contact our Forest Health Coordinator for more information.

Callery Pear

Callery Pear Buyback events encourage the removal and replacement of invasive Callery pear trees—participants who remove a tree can sign up to receive a free native replacement. Sign up for the Kansas Canopy Newsletter to be the first to know when future buyback events open.

Fire Truck

Kansas Forest Service is proud to support local fire departments with the Federal Excess Property Program, Firefighter Property Program and the Equipment Donation Program. All three programs help to put essential firefighting equipment in the hands of Kansas fire departments.

Educational Youth Programming

From Smokey Bear visits to the Arbor Day Poster Contest, our youth programs spark curiosity about trees, fire safety, and natural resource conservation. Request a Kansas Forest Service staff member to visit your school or event using our event request form.

Kansas Forest Service foresters and fire staff are proud to support public events that promote natural resource education and wildfire prevention. While we do our best to accommodate requests, participation is based on staff availability. Please submit your request using the form below, and we’ll be in touch as soon as possible. All requests should be submitted at least 8 weeks in adavance.
